A Special Thank You

Thank You to Families of Colton School District
This week at the GreenHouse was one for the record books. We broke a record for the number of households served in a single day: 72. In less than 3 hours, our team served 72 families. To say we were busy was an understatement. This week due to Presidents’ Day, we were only open two days, but we served nearly 130 families. It seems every time we turn around, we have a new person walking through our food bank doors. Don’t get me wrong, we are happy to serve our community, that’s what a food bank does! We serve people who need help. However, those needing help are growing in number rather than staying the same. Times are lean. We are grateful to have enough food to help, and for our local and state partnerships that deliver food to us, as well as our donors who help keep our lights on. Some highlights of this week for me were:
  • One of our most vulnerable clients is getting some much needed help through our community partner, Rural Resources.
  • We had donations of sleeping bags, clothing, and cat and dog food come through the door.
  • Our team of volunteers met every single benchmark this week, and they did it with a smile.
  • I laughed with many clients. I hugged, and yes—cried—with a few too.
So, while the need is great, and the days are packed full, on behalf of everyone who serves the GreenHouse and therefore the people who live in our community, Thank you!

Teri’s Can Openers

Teri’s Can Openers

Teri's Can Openers
Yesterday, I gave out a can opener, and while the person who needed it was in a hard situation and the scenario was serious, I am also grinning at the memory. Every time we give out a can opener, I am reminded that there are amazing people in the world.  In my mind, I call these can openers Teri’s Can Openers.

You see,  whenever we give out a can opener, I immediately think of one of our long-time volunteers at the GreenHouse, Teri. People who volunteer at a food bank have kind hearts and strong backbones. They often hear hard stories. They listen and because they care, they are problem solvers.

Last summer Teri said to me, “We need some can openers. How can we give canned food to people if they can’t open it?” Her words hit me like a freight train! She was so right! Some of our clients are unhoused. They can’t accept food that they cannot open! Teri had identified a need that I never had thought of. A can opener is small. It fits in a backpack or pocket, and it opens food. Yes! What a great idea!

So, we asked the greater community of GreenHouse supporters to donate some can openers and an anonymous donor stepped up. Now when we have an unhoused person walk through our doors, the first thing I ask them is if they have a can opener.
If the answer is no, we provide one. Each and every time this happens, I smile.
And this reminds me— we only have two can openers left.

GreenHouse supporters—would anyone mind donating a few can openers so that we can continue to do our good works? I thank you, our staff and team of volunteers thank you, and most importantly, our unhoused clients thank you.

With loving thoughts of Teri and all who make the GreenHouse run,

Denise

Partners Helping Partners

Partners helping partners makes stronger communities. Today one of our clients, who is also a volunteer at the VFW Hall in Elk, loaded up boxes of food to help feed fire victims at a free dinner hosted by the VFW. The GreenHouse was happy to play a small part in feeding our friends who’ve lost their homes due to the Oregon Fire.

Thanks for the grocery bags

Thanks for the Grocery Bags

The GreenHouse has had several deliveries of grocery bags this past week and we are truly grateful. Some have been delivered by hand and others came in from online orders. Thank you to all who’ve blessed us with this simple, yet critical gift. We appreciate you!

1/17/2024 Weather Adjustment

1/17/2024 Weather Adjustment

Today, WED Jan 17, 2024 the volunteers and team at the GreenHouse are going to make every effort to be OPEN to our clients.

Given how much snow is on the ground and is predicted  to fall for later today, we will be offering a DRIVE THROUGH PICK UP ONLY for the safety of both our clients and our volunteers.
We know how hard it is to push shopping carts through snow and so we’re going to modify our procedures for today.

Clients should line up their cars like we do for Tom’s Turkey Drive.

Our team of volunteers will load food into your vehicle. You will not be shopping for yourself inside the warehouse. We will assemble boxes for you.
Our CLOTHING BANK and house will be CLOSED for the day.

Thank you from Denise and the team of volunteers who are serving you today.
